Sometimes you just have to take a break. It can melt your brain to sit at a desk for hours on end (especially in the tech field where you’re editing video or writing code), and you’ll burn out quickly if you don’t give yourself a little time to recharge your batteries and have some fun.
I’ve always enjoyed having some goofy stuff in my office to distract me for a few minutes every now and then. Lets take a look at some of my favorites.
Thinking Putty
Get bored easily in meetings? Thinking putty can keep you entertained for a good while, and there’s enough in each can to make it totally sharable. You’ll be surprised at how much more fun your meetings will be, and for some reason playing with putty just puts everybody in a good mood and makes the meeting more productive. Buy a few cans. It’s clean and fun!
Nerf Weaponry
I was once lucky enough to work at a design firm where random nerf gun fights were a part of every day life. It was a great goofy bonding experience for everyone, and I swear that I worked better and harder when my day was broken up by random fun stuff like that. Check out the current arsenal on Amazon.com. I strongly recommend the velcro tips for added bragging rights.
Rubber Bands
A classic, but a fun one. Cleve and I were notorious for snipping each other with rubber bands when we worked together at LifeWay, and eventually became so good at it that it became a sort of competition for accuracy. Shortly after I left LifeWay, I joined a design firm (mentioned above) where I was able to perfect my craft. Check out my skills below.
Anything from Think Geek
If you haven’t checked out the ridiculous catelog of cool stuff from thinkgeek.com yet, you should go do it right now. They have a huge selection of hilariously awesome gadgets, such as Ninja Star Push Pins and a USB controlled Missile Launcher. I could spend a fortune there.
What things do you do to take a break in your workplace? Do you work somewhere relaxed enough to have some light-hearted fun?
Man, I used to have my apartment STOCKED with nerf guns. My roommates & I had a good 100+ nerf darts that we could use just to break up our day.
…I’m thinking it’s time to instigate “war” in the Creative department.
That Nerf war is hilarious, I want to get some of those guns now for a little bit of fun around the office, perhaps it would be useful for counseling session as well!
Hilarious!
