Like many of you, today is my first day back in the office after a healthy time of holiday vacation and reflection. The start of a fresh year is always a weird feeling for me in general, so kick-starting a new decade has given me even more to think about. Now that I’m back in the saddle, among the things at the top of my mind are upcoming projects for the new year. After some careful consideration over the last week, I’m hoping to do a few things differently starting this January.
What’s the biggest change that I want to make? Spending less time figuring out what I want to do with a project and more time asking God what He wants to do with that project. Reflecting on the last year, I was disappointed when I realized how little I actually prayed about the work that God has given me to do. If I’m honest with myself, my first resort when tackling a project is just to dive right in and try to figure things out, rather than seeking the face of the one who has the entire universe resting in His hands. I trust myself too much, and God has been very gracious to me (and those projects) in spite of that.
So, here’s my game plan… Any time I tackle a new project this year, I’m going to get in the habit of spending some time in prayer about it before I get things started. It’s just a small step, but coupled with some quality time* with the Lord every day, I think it will be a healthy move.
What about you? Do you have any resolutions set in stone to help you start the new year off on the right foot? Let us know in the comments below.
*As a quick aside, if you aren’t spending time in the Word every day, you’re really missing out. The good news is that the new year is a great time to start! YouVersion has some terrific new reading plans that are easy to use and have mobile integration that is perfectly tailored to a geeky disposition. My wife and I are on the same plan and it has been great so far. Try it out

We sometimes forget God is THE greatest designer or [enter profession] (and I’m sure he knows a thing or two or infinity more than we do!). Who better to consult in our daily grind than the one who knows everything about everything? I’m making this my goal this year as well.
Ha! That was what our message was about this weekend at The Chapel. LOL.
I want to get back to the basics and focus on Jesus in my Bible study this year. So, I’ve started a new journaling project:
“That’s What He Said…”
The Red Letter Words of Jesus.
I’m writing out every word that Jesus speaks in the gospels. In a red journal no less! But not with a red pen…
And I also want to get away by myself for a few days to think. I feel like I am at a crossroads and need to hear God’s voice. So, I need to plan that asap…
Good words, Eric! Thanks for your heart!
