I’m sure many of you share the same feelings of hopelessness every time you turn on the news and see the absolutely catastrophic destruction that Haiti has suffered since Tuesday. Through some emergency planning with our church staff over the last few days, we’ve come up with a few options for how we can respond right now.
1) Pray
This is the obvious response, but almost always subconsciously skipped over. The best thing we could do is seek God first and has Him how He wants us to help.
2) Give
Thankfully, it seems like the American public has done an excellent job at this so far. As the days continue, there have been more and more options and funds to give to, which will hopefully serve to fuel this initial response.
3) Raise Targeted Support
Try to find local ministries that already had a presence/connection to Haiti and narrow things down to a very specific way you can help. For instance, our Church already had ties with several organizations down there and are hoping to meet a critical need for blankets through a large-scale donation push this Sunday.
4) Start Planning Now for Later
Next to prayer, this may be the most important strategy. Thankfully, the crisis in Haiti has the full attention of the nation and the media right now, but this won’t always be the case. Start now planning relief efforts, rebuilding trips, orphan strategies, and other things that can aid the people of Haiti long after the media coverage has moved on to the next hot story. The Body of Christ needs to mount a sustained campaign of love to these people.
