Duncan Robinson, from Church of Celebration, told us about something his church is in the middle of. You might remember Duncan from the posts we published about their successful fall festival.
Free Money?
The church’s current message series is called “Freakonomics.” The first week of the series, the church gave away $3000 in cash. Each person received anywhere from $1 through $100 bills. The goal was for them to invest that money in someone else’s life.
Duncan says, “The idea being spending other people’s money is fun.”
Freakonomics.me (the supporting website)
Check out Freakonomics.me.
This site was created to support the message series and give folks a sounding board to share their stories of how others were blessed with the money given to them. You can also read the posted stories. Duncan says the response has been “massive.”
“What I think is amazing is that investing $1 in someone’s life and blessing them for Jesus has had the same kind of impact as the $100 gifts to bless someone. It has also ignited a real spirit of generosity, even if people are spending other people’s money, and blessing people.”
The “Take Home”
The last message in the series will drive the point home “It is fun giving away other people’s money to bless people, then why don’t we have that attitude with the wealth GOD has given us?”
What do you think?
I know this isn’t a new idea, but it is a recent success story of a church handing out “free money.” Also, it’s a great use of a mini-site to support a series initiative.
Has your church tried to do this, or something similar? What was your experience? Please share your thoughts below.
