Facebook Ads Just Got More Specific

New Targeting

While running ads for our new campus launch, I discovered new targeting options that weren’t available the last time I set up an ad.

1. Connections

Connection targets aren’t brand new, but there are several new options.

One win for me is the ability to target friends of users who are connected  to our main Facebook Page or any of our campus Pages. This target alone produces an estimated reach of 500,000 folks.

You can use this section to target people connected to any page, event or group that you are an administrator of.

2. Advanced Targeting - Birthdays

There is one new option under Advanced Targeting. You now have the ability to run ongoing ads that only target folks on their birthday.

I haven’t used it yet, but I want to. My brain is churning through some ideas such as…

  • Partner with local restaurants to offer coupon downloads. Get 12 restaurants to sponsor one month each, and the ad brings folks to a page on your church’s website.
  • Ad that only targets folks who are fans of your Facebook Page - Brings them to a page with a birthday wish from the pastor. Make sure you change this yearly.
